As Rural Lifestyle Options Australia continue to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we want to make sure you have what you need in your emergency kit for cyclones and severe weather. ‼️

Being prepared in advance is key to staying safe when storms and cyclones hit, as they can bring flooding, power outages and water supply issues.

🛑 What to include in your emergency kit 🛑

Your survival kit should be tailored to your specific needs.

If you have babies, small children, medical conditions or a disability, make sure to account for those needs when preparing your kit.

Basic items to include:

  • 📻 Radio – Battery-powered, wind-up, or solar-powered radio. Don’t forget to mark the ABC Radio frequencies for your area.

  • 💡 Light – A waterproof torch, plus a second light that doesn’t need batteries, and candles with waterproof matches or glow sticks.

  • 💧 Drinking Water – At least 10 litres per person for 3 days.

  • 🍲 Food – Long-life, dried foods with some utensils to last for 3 days.

  • 🔋 Batteries – Spare batteries for all devices (check them every 6 months).

  • 🚻 Toiletries – Soap, toilet paper, tissues, hand sanitiser, wipes, toothpaste, sanitary items, and face masks.

  • 🎲 Fun Stuff – Books, games, or other entertainment for the family.

  • 💵 Cash – Enough to meet basic needs for a few days.

  • 🚑 First-aid Kit – Ensure it’s stocked and that items are not expired.

  • 🖼 Photographs – Of valuable household items for insurance purposes.

  • 🐾 Pet Essentials – Don't forget your pet’s food, water, comfort items, and ensure they’re microchipped with updated vaccinations.

  • 💊 Special Medical Supplies – Include prescriptions, usage details, and dosage amounts.

  • 🛍 Waterproof Bags – To protect important documents like ID, prescriptions, and insurance info.

  • 📜 Written Emergency Plan – Include contact numbers for family or neighbours, and consider using the Red Cross Australia's Get Ready app to help you build your plan.

  • 🧥 Protective Clothing – Long-sleeved, natural-fibre shirts, warm clothing, rubber boots for flood areas, sunscreen, insect repellent, and wide-brimmed hats for extra protection.

Stay prepared, stay safe and keep yourself and your loved ones out of harm’s way. 💙

As Rural Lifestyle Options Australia prepare for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we want to make sure you are informed and ready. ‼️

Premier David Crisafulli, along with Bureau of Meteorology’s Matt Collopy and Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy, have urged residents to prepare now for the possibility of Alfred making landfall in South East Queensland this week.

South East Queensland is at risk of severe flooding, erosion, and dangerous surf. While the exact landfall location is still uncertain, Bribie Island, Moreton Island and North Stradbroke are likely to be impacted first.

Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe during Cyclone Alfred:

🔴 Stay Informed:

  • Register for free Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts.

  • Follow social media channels for real-time updates from relevant authorities.

  • Check your local Council’s emergency dashboard and tune in to local radio stations for the latest info.

🌧️ Prepare Your Home:

  • Roof & Gutters: Inspect your roof for loose tiles, eaves, or broken guttering and make repairs. Clean gutters and downpipes to ensure water drains quickly.

  • Trees & Branches: Trim any branches that are too close to your home.

  • Sealants: Ensure window sills are sealed to prevent leaks.

  • Maintenance: Fix any loose fittings or damaged timber around your home.

🧹 Additional Prep:

  • Empty standing water from containers and paddling pools.

  • Disconnect all electrical appliances and outdoor aerials.

  • Fill buckets and bathtubs with clean water in case of supply disruptions.

  • Move outdoor equipment, chemicals, and trash to higher ground.

  • Protect fridges/freezers and valuables by moving them off the ground or to higher areas.

  • Sandbag indoor drains to prevent sewerage backflow.

  • Park vehicles safely away from trees, powerlines and waterways.

🐾 Ensure Safety for All:

  • Make sure all household members (including pets) are in a safe, strong room like the bathroom or laundry.

  • Take your emergency kit with you while sheltering.

💧 Water & Sewage Preparedness:

  • Fill containers with clean water and prepare for potential water supply interruptions.

  • Sandbag internal drains to prevent sewage backflow.

🚗 Be Ready to Leave Early:

  • Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel and park it in a sheltered area.

  • Make an evacuation plan and check for road closures before leaving.

🔌 Utility Shutdown:

  • Be ready to disconnect your gas, electricity, solar power and water services if instructed to do so.

🏠 Secure Your Home:

  • Install cyclone screens and secure windows and doors if possible.

  • Tape plastic sheeting to windows to prevent wind and rain from entering.

Stay prepared, stay safe and keep yourself and your loved ones out of harm’s way. 💙
